Air conditioning filters are fundamental in maintaining HVAC units’ efficiency. The primary function of these filters is to prevent dust and other airborne particles from getting into HVAC units. Without them, the dust particles would build up and damage your air conditioner.

This is why it is imperative to maintain the air conditioner filters or else the system’s efficiency would reduce over time. These dust particles can also trigger your allergies and aggravate your asthma issue.

These are the types of air conditioning filters available for your home:

Fiberglass Air Filters

These air filters are the least expensive option you can find in the market as they are disposable. Their primary function is to ensure adequate circulation and ventilation. They reduce the strain on HVAC units by drawing out good air and blocking large dust particles. However, they are not ideal for blocking small debris and other dust particles.

So, if someone in your family has a respiratory problem or any other dust-related allergy, we would suggest you check for other filter options.

HEPA Filters:

These filters remove at least 99.97% of airborne germs. If you can want to get rid of pollutants like mold spores and small dust particles, and debris, you should install HEPA filters as they provide the highest protection. No matter how small the airborne particle is, there is a high chance that the HEPA filter would remove it. Due to its efficacy, the HEPA filter is ideal for those who have allergies or other respiratory issues.

Pleated Air Filters

The pleated air filters are better at blocking dust particles than fiberglass filters because they have a larger surface area. Since they’re more effective than fiberglass filters, pleated air filters are also more expensive. Having said that, the increased surface area also hampers the airflow and therefore, pleated air filters put a strain on the HVAC units

UV Filters:

You may not be required to install these filters as, most of the time, they are already built into the HVAC system. These filters use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria. While the UV filters are good at improving the air quality, they are not highly efficient at getting rid of dust particles.

Electrostatic Filters:

These are the most effective filters available in the market. Moreover, they are also reusable, so you do not have to purchase them again. They are also good at improving the air quality.
